The Calgary Stampede is an annual festival, exhibition and rodeo held in Calgary, Alberta in Canada in July every year-round. It is the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth, it attracts millions of tourists every year.
It is the one of the world's largest place to exhibit different shows like rodeos, midway, concerts, stage shows, a parade, and many agricultural events and competitions.
American promoter Guy Weadick when returned to Calgary in 1919, he organized the Victory Stampede to honor the World War I soldiers. After that event it became annual festival. And, in 1923 it was merged with Calgary Industrial Exhibition to create Calgary Exhibition and Stampede.
This Stampede is supported by civic leaders and organized by thousands of volunteers to make this Stampede world's richest rodeos, and largest festival in Canada. Due to this event Calgary got national and international recognition. And, it is called as “Stampede City”.
Rodeo is the main event and heart of the Calgary Stampede. It is the largest and famous event in the world. The prize money for the winner of each discipline is $100,000 and $1,000,000 total on championship day.
There are six disciplines like bull riding, steer wrestling, barrel racing, tie down roping, saddle bronc and bareback riding are main events and four novice events including junior steer riding, junior bareback riding, novice saddle bronc and wild pony racing events are for junior lovers.
It is of its kind in the world and North America. And, horses and bulls are supplied by the Stampede Ranch. It provides the quality of horses and bulls for the Stampede. It also operates in breeding program that produces top quality rodeo stock in the world.
The Rangeland Derby
The Rangeland Derby is also known as Chuckwagon racing which also existed in 1923. And, this event become one of the world's famous and largest attraction. The Rangeland Derby consists of 36 teams competing for $1.15 million in prize. Joe Carbury has given his voice to the Rangeland Derby for 45 years. He used to start the race and this announcement made him legend.
Exhibition is the integral part of Calgary Stampede. The agricultural exhibition was first introduced in 1886, today, it is the one of the main attraction in this Stampede. This exhibition is made up of fifty agricultural programs by more than 1000 exhibitors.
There are many competitions held as a part of exhibition. World Championship Blacksmith competition that attract millions of blacksmiths from the world. And, various other events related to farming and ranching are also held.
These exhibitions are held to serve and educate public about Alberta's agricultural heritage and ranching along with modern food production.
Calgary has been identified as a “Stampede City”, and it has been given the nickname of “Cowtown”. The status of Stampede has given Calgary a global publicity and it has defined the city's image. Calgary Football League team has been named as Stampeders since 1945, and this name was shared by other teams as well.
